CITY ALIEN

This weekend I visited Silverhill, a small community founded by Swedish farmers, to celebrate the 90th anniversary of its community hall. It's only a one room log cabin in the middle of the woods, but it was amazing to see just a simple building bring together so many people and generations.

I was in a pretty bad mood driving in from the city but as soon as I got there my spirits lifted and I couldn't help but feel changed from the support and togetherness of these people. They would do anything for each other. Their parents were best friends and now they were best friends. They trade lettuce for eggs and quilts for cows. They still make people like this?? Yes, they do. Although some of them were my family I felt a bit envious of their stories and connections with each other. I felt like a cold, angry city alien watching the scene.

So where I'm at in life I think the best way for me to achieve that same sense of community is to start a monthly dance party. I'm talkin' a serious dance-til-you-bust-a-toe party. Also I'm going to create a barter system so we don't have to worry about money ever again. Stay tuned....

  1. I think that a monthly dance party is a good idea! We could do a potluck as well, get all our old and new friends together and let loose for the night.
